1. Discover Nature at Cold Springs National Wildlife Refuge

The Cold Springs National Wildlife Refuge is the ideal destination to take your kids to discover the wonders of nature. The untouched 3,117-acre wilderness spreads over grassland, wetland, and riparian habitats filled with a collection of 21 species of mammals, 212 documented bird species, 14 species of reptiles, and at least seven fish species.
Enjoy nature hiking, biking, and horseback riding on the trails and paddling, boating, and fishing for bass and crappie from the reservoir’s banks. The refuge is at 79870 Reservoir Road in Stanfield and is open year-round from a half-hour before dawn to a half-hour after sunset.

2. Have Loads of Fun at Butte Park

The 40-acre Butte Park on 1245 NW 7th Street at the foot of Hermiston Butte is one of the best places around town for kids to have fun. The park features soccer fields, large open spaces, paved walking paths, trails that run to the top of the Butte, a dog park, a spray park, and the Northwest’s premier playground. There are ample spots with tables to enjoy a family picnic, a concession stand for a quick bite to eat, and restroom facilities.

The Funland Playground

The thrilling Funland Playground is the ultimate playground structure and the largest in the Northwest. The enormous playground has a Wild West, Farmland, and Adventure Zone where your kids can play and run wild. They can ride on the locomotive, stagecoach, and wagon train and set sail on a pirate ship with a Kraken sea monster.

There are massive fruits and vegetables, a barn and silo with gigantic slides, and a 6-foot watermelon slice. While your kids have a blast, you can prepare a picnic in the Rotary or the Kiwanis Picnic Shelters.

The Butte Spray Park

Your kids will have a ball on a hot day at the 4500-square-foot Butte Spray Park, running around on the concrete splash pad through the multiple spray features to cool off. The Butte Spray Park is next to the Funland Playground and is open daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

3. Step Back in Time at the Maxwell Siding Railroad Museum

The outdoor Maxwell Siding Railroad Museum at 201 W Highland Avenue in Hermiston takes you back to 1883 when the railroad came to Hermiston. The museum is run by two retired railroad workers, Connie Maret and John Spinden, and displays a vast collection of railroad artifacts and memorabilia. There are old advertisements, rails, a 1910 rotary snow plow, and a 1949 steam-powered snowplow, the last of its kind used in the country.

The 1913 George Pullman dining car and a 1912 passenger coach are the biggest attractions. The museum is open on Saturdays, or you can phone (541) 567-8532 to make an appointment.
